August in Upstate South Carolina runs on a schedule. Cloudless mornings, cumulus piling up by noon, and a real thunderstorm somewhere over the foothills by 3 p.m. If you're leaving Greenville today or this weekend for SC-11, Lake Jocassee, or Caesars Head, that rhythm is the single most important thing to plan around. Not the destination. The drive.
The Volvo XC60 is a familiar sight heading toward the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway from our lot on Duvall Drive, and it's genuinely well-suited to the Upstate's summer conditions. Well-suited still isn't infallible. The 2026 XC60's on-demand AWD, 8.5 inches of standard ground clearance, and standard Lane Keeping Aid are real advantages, and they work harder when you drive correctly for the conditions. What to Do (and Not Do) on SC-11 in Summer
SC-11 winds 119 miles through the Upstate foothills, from I-85 near Lake Hartwell all the way to Gaffney, and it's the kind of two-lane road that rewards patience. Expect elevation changes, blind curves, gravel pulloffs at trailheads, and afternoon weather that moves faster than most navigation apps will warn you about.

Brake Before the Bend, Not In It
Braking before the bend is the one habit that changes everything on a two-lane foothills road, so settle to your intended cornering speed while the road is still straight, before you reach the apex. Do that and the car has one job at a time. In the corner the XC60 and XC90 both track cleanly (the AWD system distributes torque based on available grip, not a preset), though asking the chassis to brake, steer, and carry lateral load all at once is too much for any vehicle.
The Volvo XC90 adds hill descent control as a standard feature, which helps if you're pulling a boat to Lake Keowee or tacking on a side trip to a steeper trailhead access road. The EPA rates the 2026 XC90 B5 AWD at 24 MPG combined, respectable for a three-row family hauler on a 119-mile scenic byway. For a couple or a smaller group, the XC60 plug-in hybrid makes a compelling last-minute case, since the EPA estimates 35 miles of all-electric range on the T8. Your I-85 and I-385 departure from Greenville can run on battery before you ever touch a gas station.
Check the tires before anything else. Neither vehicle's a substitute for good tire condition, and worn tires on wet pavement on a mountain descent are a problem AWD can't solve. In August our service drive sees tire pressure reading high on cars that just came off I-85 hot, which is why cold-inflation is the number that counts. Check your tread depth before you go.
Before you leave Greenville: check tire pressure, wiper condition, and fuel or charge level. It takes five minutes. SC-11 has limited services once you're past Travelers Rest heading northwest.

- Departure timing before noon if possible, to clear the foothills ahead of the peak afternoon storm window
- Blanket or dry bag in cargo for waterfall hikes near Raven Cliff Falls
